DMIC in WHAKAPONO 20

This is Dmic in action...

Our PROBLEM
On the pirate ship there are 24 pirate swords. Each pirate has 2 swords.
If half the pirates lost a sword in battle and a quarter of the pirates each gained a new sword, how many swords would there now be on the pirate ship?
If a third of the swords were then lost how many would there be left?
Our Children were put into groups of 4. In those four they would come up with strategies to answer the question and then explain to their group how they came to that conclusion. They then agree on it and then are taught to explain it back to the bigger group eventually after they felt confident and certain that they understood the question as well and the answer was a good way to answer it.
The children did really really really well by talking to each other about how they could answer it and then draw little pictures to help them see the picture. By the end of the lesson the groups felt very confident with their working together and how they agreed to disagree and how to work around each disagreement.
We look forward to many more great learning lessons of DMIC to GROW OUR PEOPLE

This group were discussing and enjoying their learning.

Feel free to come and visit our class and see DMIC in action.

SWIMMING LESSONS TERM 1

Yes we have started... We were given the ODD weeks so we missed week 1. This week however is week 3. We were able to use the pool, alas our first lesson did not go ahead as most our children forgot their swimwear at home.
Day 2 was better with most our children remembering, our lessons went ahead.
From reading our PRIDE rules of the pool, walking in safely into the swimming area and the pool our lesson was fabulously awesome!!
Lesson included sitting on the floor
Swimming with the board while kicking, then breast stroke with the boards
They then swam without the boards doing the breast stroke
They then did floating on their backs kicking, then with arms and kicking.

The children were happy the day was beautiful to have their swimming lesson.

Whakapono 20 Week 3

We have started a new maths initiative called DMIC Developing Mathematical Inquiry communities.
The children are put into smalls groups and are to problem solve sums using their voices and their strategies. This is for them to challenge each other and agree to disagree. Once a decision has been made the children are then to relay to each what the strategy was that they agreed on.
The group was mix ability and the children were able to learn a strategy they didn't think about at the time of putting ideas together.

How to teach DMIC
Children talking
Scribing
Agreeing to disagree

The children found this task somewhat tricky, they were all listening to Allan explaining his reason for his strategy.

Whakapono 20 week 2

This week we celebrated Red heart day... Raising funds for children with broken hearts; sick hearts.
It was also valentines day so we decided to make friendship cards for our buddy class to get to know them.
Aroha 6 took the photos of the buddies.

We made $503... all proceeds go to the Heart foundation.

WELCOME TO 2019

Talofa Malo lelei Bula vinaka Fakalofa lahi atu Kiaorana Kia ora

We welcome 25 children into Whakapono 20 this year, they all started with great attitudes to their learning already.
Here are some of our children already trialling DMIC which we will show and explain throughout the term.
They were given a maths problem and were tole this is the expectation, problem solve and share your answer, and by your using strategies, however the children need to agree with the strategy and talk about the reason yes or no.. Justifying their answer and then when they have come to their conclusion present it... So we are excited for our children to Inquire more...
Here is a link you may check to see Videos, Research and Why DMIC...? DMIC
